Derek Birkett, MSW, LCSW - Clinical Supervisor (he, him & his)

Derek received his master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2019. With over five years of experience, he specializes in providing trauma-informed care to children, adolescents, families, and adults navigating emotional and behavioral challenges, as well as addictive patterns. Drawing from cognitive-behavioral, dialectical-behavioral, attachment-based, and trauma-focused approaches, Derek takes a compassionate, client-centered stance. He believes that asking the right question is halfway to the right answer and encourages deep, self-compassionate inquiry as a path to healing. His work focuses on helping individuals make sense of their experiences, build self-compassion, and reclaim lost or exiled parts of themselves affected by trauma or adversity. Derek is a social justice advocate and LGBTQ+ ally dedicated to inclusive and affirming care.

Beyond his work with clients, Derek is actively involved in training development and staff education at Trailways Counseling, where he also serves as a clinical supervisor. He is committed to supporting the growth of fellow clinicians, providing guidance and mentorship as they develop their skills. In addition to his role at Trailways, he offers external supervision for individuals pursuing licensure and for organizations needing supervision to meet Comprehensive Community Services (CCS) requirements.

Derek sees himself as a fellow traveler in life, walking alongside those he works with as they navigate their own paths. Outside of his professional role, he feels most at home in nature, whether skiing, hiking, or simply spending time outdoors. Indoors, he is an avid reader, movie-watcher, and a perpetual learner of the guitar.

Derek provides outpatient services virtually and clinical supervision for Trailways Counseling therapists. Derek is accepting new oupatient virtual patients.
